  1. The main point, I think, is that you need to be actively engaged when you read something. The more actively engaged you are, the more associations you will make with prior knowledge, and therefore the more likely you are to remember the content longer, and in more detail.

    I personally am a big fan of underlining and making notes - in the margins of the page, and in a separate notebook. That strategy works great for me. I still remember how an extensive and systematized note-taking system enabled me to do really well on a paper I had to write about the book 'Como agua para chocolate' by Laura Esquivel - for a grad. level Spanish course at Webster U. in St. Louis, MO. We had to include numerous references from the book - and my extensive/organized/systematized notes made all the difference.
    Rigorous underlining and note taking really works for me.
    However I also know Students who will read an entire book for a high school assignment or project and never once underline anything or take any notes. They don't understand that that is hurting them/limiting their ability to go back and expract specific information etc...
