The auction

Here are the statements you guys bought at the auction. Hope you keep them in mind everytime you prepare your classes.

Language skills are rarely separated in real life. T
Writing is the skill that is always done in isolation. F
One example of input in the classroom is reading texts students are exposed too. T
An example of integration of skills is cooperative writing. T
It is impossible to use a single activity to look at different language points. F
The ideal language sequence should offer both skill integration and language study. T
In Top-down processing students focus on individual aspects. F
Intensive reading and listening tense to be relaxed and less concentrated. F
Automaticity is hindered by extensive reading. F
Successful authentic material depends on the nature of the tasks that go with it. T
Comprehensible input aids language acquisition. T
Prediction is a strategy that people normally do not use in real life. F
Incomprehensible input tends to motivate students. F
The right level of material depends on text and task. T
The more language we expose students to the more they will learn. T

Take care.

Change of dates

Just drop by to leave some info on a slight change we will have in the upcoming modules. We are to switch modules 5 and 6 like this:

Module 6: Productive skills (Camilo)
August 16 (JoEllen does her 2 hours for research)
August 17, 18, 19 (Friday) 22, 23, 24, 25

Lesson plan beliefs

Here is the list of the beliefs we checked in class today. Choose one you agree with and another one you disagree with.

1. Having written lesson plans allows me to see what I have done with a group and to keep a record of the progress.

2. I prepare a lesson plan only to satisfy my supervisor - I honestly feel I don't need one.

3. Having a lesson plan shows professionalism from the teacher.

4. I don't need a lesson plan 'cause I have taught this class many times before, and I can do the same activities.

5. A lesson plan should include a detailed description of all the activities.

6. Having a written lesson plan ensures students confidence in the teacher.

7. I can prepare my class in my mind and I won't forget what to do.

8. A lesson plan should be at least a page long.

9. A lesson plan must be always written.

10. Students enjoy classes without a lesson plan more because they will have more opportunities to decide what to talk about or what to do.

11. Lesson plans impede spaces for improvisation and creativity.

Have a good night!!

More on podcast!

Hi everybody,

Inspired by Veronica's link I decided to share an example that will give you an idea of what podcasting is and how you can use it with language students. Go to the following link:

http://splendidspeaking.podomatic.com/player/web/2006-10-26T05_07_12-07_00

This is taken from a podcast called "splendid speaking" and features two students having a conversation and a teacher giving tips on how to do it. Think of other ways podcasting can be used in ELT classes.
